Believe me, it applies to all difficult situations and when I narrate how I realized this trick, you would be surprised.
I was interacting with a friend’s son some time back and happened to ask about his girlfriend. He narrated a sad story from which he learned something very interesting. In school one day, he was asked by a beautiful classmate if he knew how to make videos on Powtoon. He being totally ignorant about it, replied that he did not know how to do it. He was new to the school and really wished he knew it and had a ‘YES‘ answer to her question. It so happened at that instance, one guy, sitting behind them told her that he knew how to do it and even volunteered to teach her in their free time.
He became friends with the guy, impressed by his skills of making videos. Later, the guy revealed that when he had told the girl that he had the skill, he had actually bluffed her. Having done so, the guy got the opportunity to get close to her. The guy then taught her in bits and pieces as he kept learning things himself.
Ethically this appears wrong, but it has been observed to work everywhere. Had he lied to her, he would have been closest to her and now he really repents for being so silly and naive. These days, he believes that a small lie is sometimes better than absolute truth. Every time he sees them together, one can imagine what he might be going through. But, it’s okay. Learnt from his blunder- he has learnt to fake and make it.
Through this learning, he had earned enough fake name and fame initially, which later on converted into reality by his efforts and hard work. Thanks to the internet and cell phone, it helps him out from all awkward situations. Not kidding, his cell phone is his saviour!
Listening to his story, made me realize that it is smart to tap the opportunity by saying YES and later proving or delivering it by LEARNING. It is just the matter of buying some time to learn and acquire knowledge and manage the fake YES. It’s just being positive!
Analysing further, I found that this is what all are doing. Faking knowledge at the time of interviews, buying time, and then proving oneself. It helps to portray intelligent and then be one. Had the person be true, he would have been stagnant without any motivation to learn and prove. This small trick works in most instances and also becomes a blessing in disguise.
Here comes my story of how I faked to be a technical writer. One day, years back, I received a phone call asking if I can write user manuals. Believe me I had just referred some to fix my issues . But, the spontaneous ‘YES’ made the difference. Meeting was arranged and being new to IT industry, things were very difficult for me. I used to sit with paper and pen and jot down all the IT terms that seemed alien to me, come home, google all, understand and implement. It introduced me to the interesting and rewarding profession. Then, I took up courses to facilitate me in technical writing and here I am, a TECHNICAL WRITER from a CONTENT WRITER.
Ah..ha…You already are aware of how I know so many things and why my answer is always ‘YES’!
Now, that I have revealed my secret, do give me some time to MAKE IT. It is best being a Learner for Life than confessing with a NO.
Please comment with instances of how you fake to make. Share your fakes, making it more happening. 🙂
A refreshing, new angle – a totally new perspective to approach in your professional life. It might get a bit risky here, but what’s life without a challenge now and then, eh? Great article. Keep writing, Kulthoughts!
